Al Mahmud laid to rest in Brahmanbaria hometown

Al Mahmud, a major poet of modern Bangla literature who died on Friday at the age of 82, was laid to rest in his hometown of Brahmanbaria on Sunday afternoon.

After the final janaza at Niaz Mohammad High School field, his body was buried at South Mourail Graveyard.

Before the funeral, his body was kept at the Brahmanbaria Government College premises, allowing people of his hometown to pay their last respects.

There was also a poetry event, where poets from all over Bangladesh recited his poems and reminisced about his works.

The poet’s son, Mir Sharif Mahmud, read out a statement at the program. Brahmanbaria Press Club President Rashidul Islam, BNP’s Brahmanbaria President and the poet’s maternal uncle Hafizur Rahman Molla, among others, spoke at the event.

Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud, popularly known as Al Mahmud, was one of the seminal writers of Bangla literature. He passed away on Friday at 11:05pm at the Intensive Care Unit of Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area.

Mahmud, who is considered to be one of the finest novelists, short story writers and essayists of the country, authored over 50 books in over six decades.

In the 1950s, he was among the Bengali poets who were outspoken in their writings on subjects such as the events of the Language Movement, nationalism, political and economic repression, and the struggle against the Pakistani government.
