Hasina recalls Bhashani's contributions
Awami League appears to be poised to bring breakaway strands into its fold and further consolidate its political strength on the brink of electing a new leadership for the ruling party. Speaking at the 20th national council of what she said was the oldest political party of the subcontinent, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recognised the likes of those as its founders who later parted ways with Awami League. Hasina mentioned Maulana Bhashani during her speech along with Shamsul Haque who was the first president of the party. A party communiqué had also mentioned Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy as one of founders, a recognition that had not been so overt in recent memory. Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani had led the party for the first eight years after its formation but resigned after criticising the party and went on to lead his own political platform all the while maintaining close relations with Bangladesh’s founding president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who had served as the party general secretary under him for several terms. Looking back at the party’s history, which is intertwined with the emergence of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the sun that set with the Battle of Plassey in 1757 had risen in Meherpur in 1971, not too far away. That was where the four leaders of Awami League formed the provisional government of independent Bangladesh, with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, still jailed in Pakistan, as its head. She expressed her gratitude to the nations that supported Bangladesh’s independence, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Russia and all the people of the world.
