Internal dispute foils BNP’s ‘Democracy Killing Day’ rally

Update : 09 Jan 2017, 05:25 PM

BNP central and senior leaders have already tried to solve the problems for several times but they failed to resolve the crisis, leading the party to a poor condition, said insider of the party.

BNP planned to stage strong protest on Sunday marking the ‘Democracy Killing Day’ but only Barisal, Sylhet, Brahmanbaria and Dhaka's Mirpur and Kamrangirchar units staged the demos.

Several central leaders of BNP wishing anonymity told the Dhaka Tribune that BNP failed to walk out on the street due to internal disputes and expired committees in grassroots levels.

They alleged that internal feud of BNP in all the district, upazila and union units have taken a new turn centring the main opposition party's agitation programme in line with the central instructions.

BNP middle-ranked leaders also blamed senior leaders for not taken initiatives to solve the problems. They blamed that BNP had to suffer in Narayanganj City Corporation polls, held on December 22 last year as central committee could not solve the disputes prevailing among local leaders.

They also urged senior leaders to take actions to solve the problems.

However, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press briefing held at party’s Nayapaltan central office on Sunday evening thanked countrymen to response BNP's calls.

He said: “Activists and leaders of BNP staged demonstrations countrywide amid law enforcement agencies’ obstruction.”

He alleged that law enforcement agencies and ruling party activists tried to foil the protest and police also arrested around hundred activists of BNP during the protest.

Blaming ruling party Awami League, Rizvi said: “The government once again proved that they have shutdown all windows of democracy by not allowing us to hold rally at Suhrawardy Udyan. I, on behalf of BNP, strongly denounce the government’s attitude.”

He also declared countrywide demonstration against government’s attitude on January 15.
