"People won't participate in the next general election if the government plots to send Khaleda Zia to jail by fabricating allegations against her," He remarked at Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium during a programme on Wednesday afternoon.
The BNP leader also reiterated allegations that new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nurul Huda was partial to the ruling Awami League.
Regarding the new CEC, The BNP secretary general said: "After he lost his job due to allegations of misdeeds in party activities, he was responsible for the publicity wings of the Awami League during the 2008 elections."
Fakhrul added that, while BNP was yet to make a decision on whether they would contest the next general elections, they would certainly contest the local polls.
"The nation needs an impartial national election, but it is impossible to hold a free and fair election while the balance of power is so skewed," Fakhrul said.
Furthermore, he called for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to hold elections under a neutral government as they would cement her name in history.
Addressing the prime minister, Fakhrul said: "Why are you afraid to hold elections under a neutral government? Your statue would be placed in the museum if you did. Why don't you take charge? Because you know that if the election is held under a neutral government, then you will no longer be in power."
