BNP: Vision 2030 not an election manifesto
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Vision 2030 is not an election manifesto, but a road map for the next 13 years, said BNP leaders. Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan said in BNP came to power after the next national election, it would implement its promises by 2030. He added that BNP refused to take part in the national election under Sheikh Hasina’s government, echoing BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir who said last week that BNP was not a party of “idiots” who would take part in a one-sided election.

Nazrul also said BNP was willing to take part in the national election if it would be held under an impartial government. When asked why BNP had announced Vision 2030 at the present time, BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said on Saturday: “We want to see the country change in accordance with our visions by 2030. That is the only reason our party’s chief announced this vision. “Now that we have presented our goals, the country’s political experts, academics and civil society members will have discussions on this and their suggestions will also be considered.”

Gayeshwar added: “Awami League says our Vision 2030 is mostly comprised of ideas taken from Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina’s Vision 2021, but then again, they have said these are empty words. They need to make up their minds about what they mean and speak clearly.” As per Section 90H (1) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), the registration of a political party can be cancelled if it did not participate in two consecutive parliamentary elections. At this point, it is now necessary for BNP and its alliance members to take part in the next national polls in order to hold on to their registered party status. In spite of this pressure, the party leaders maintain that BNP will take part in the election if it is held fair and free and under an impartial government, and have expressed hopes that the party will prevail in 2019, should they take part.
