BNP: Home minister must resign
Condemning a police raid on BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s office at Gulshan in Dhaka, the party has demanded the resignation of Home Minister Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. “Police illegally raided the office, and the home minister cannot avoid his responsibilities in this regard. He must answer,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday, when speaking at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters. “Such an incident never took place in the country’s political history,” he added. On Saturday, the police raided Khaleda’s office hunting for “anti-state documents” that sparked angry protests by hundred of party supporters across the country. The law enforcers, however, said they found nothing during the two-hour search. Alleging that the government started a mass arrest of BNP leaders and activists again, Fakhrul said: “Through the raid, the government once again demonstrated that it does not believe in democracy. This type of fascist aggression will spoil the future of democracy in the country.” Terming the search a provocative one, the top BNP leader also said: “The raid was conducted at a time when BNP has started practicing politics in a peaceful manner through presenting Vision-2030.” He said they would take legal actions after holding discussions with lawyers. BNP Vice Chairman Zainul Abedin said: “As per the Code of Criminal Procedure, two local elite persons must be present during such a raid. But no such persons were there at that time.” According to laws, the authorities will have to inform the owner of a building and residents before conducting a search. As these legal procedures were not followed, this is an illegal raid, added Zainul, also president of Supreme Court Bar Association.

In Satkhira, the police arrested four leaders of district unit BNP while they were trying to bring out a procession in the town, adds our Satkhira correspondent. Our Barisal correspondent reports that leaders and activists of the party held a rally there as well. Similar protest programmes were held in many other districts including Jhenidah, Khulna, Lakshmipur, Narayanganj, Pabna, Rangpur and Thakurgaon.
