The ruling party Awami League (AL) sent copies of a letter to its rural offices on Thursday asking the party men to monitor the Election Commission’s voter list update programme.
Following the party president Sheikh Hasina’s order, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader signed the letter and sent it to the respective presidents and general secretaries of AL's district units.
AL Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman MP confirmed the matter when Syed Shamsul Alam Hiru, president of AL's Gaibandha unit, and Fazlur Rahman, president of AL's Tangail unit, affirmed that they received the letters.
According to AL sources, the letter stated that "enlisting the right voters is as important as the [next national] election". It also mentioned that the party men should carefully supervise the voter list update programme.
The Election Commission will start updating the voter list from July 25. They are expecting 2.5% of new voters in the next national election.
