Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh chief Shah Ahmed Shafi's press secretary Munir Ahmed has been fired from the organisation. He was a key figure in the penning of the radical Islamist group's infamous 13-point demands.
On Monday evening, Munir handed over his charge and left Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong, the Hefazat headquarters, where he had been living for the last 23 years. Sources say he was fired over an internal feud.
A Hathazari Madrasa source said over the last few months, Munir had been openly critical of the organisation and Shafi's activities in pushing the 13-point demands and anti-government movements.
Munir was one of the key persons in the 2013 Hefazat movement and the formulation of the 13-point demand.
Over phone, Munir told the Dhaka Tribune: “Hujur [Shafi] told me to resign from my post and hand over all of my charge. Following the order on Monday I handed over all my responsibilities.”
He said that Shafi had removed him without any notice and any official procedure.
“This is like an autocratic system,” he added.
Sources said Munir was locked in a conflict with Moulana Anas Madani, assistant director (education) of the madrasa, over personal and organisational issues. The Hefazat chief apparently leaned towards Anas and decided to sacked Munir.
Munir was also the executive editor of the Hefazat's mouthpiece monthly Moinul Islam, a post that he also resigned from on Monday.
