JSD (Inu): Constituency boundaries need not be re-demarcated
The Inu-led Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) has opined that the boundaries of constituencies need not be re-demarcated before the next parliamentary election, as no census will be conducted within this period. Leaders of the JSD, a member party of the ruling Awami League-led 14-party alliance, expressed the opinion during a dialogue with Election Commission officials in the commission’s office at Agargaon in Dhaka yesterday. Twenty representatives of the party attended the talk organised as part of the commission’s action plan for the polls slated for late next year or early 2019. While most of the political parties have been arguing against the use of electronic voting machine (EVM) in the election, the leaders of the JSD, led by Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, expressed their views in support of the use of EVM. The JSD leaders put forward a total of 17 recommendations during the talk. They suggested taking measures to bar leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, and those loyal to it, from contesting the polls either independently or with tickets of other political parties, as the party’s registration was cancelled by the High Court over its anti-Liberation role in 1971. They also demanded the commission take measures so that no party using the “JSD” name can register with the commission before the polls. If a member of a registered political party joins an unregistered party and wants to contest under the latter’s banner, he or she should be declared disqualified and barred from taking part in the election, said Hasanul Haq Inu. The JSD split into two factions. The other faction is led by Sharif Nurul Ambia, Najmul Haque Prodhan and Moin Uddin Khan Badal, among others.
