Rizvi: Police baton-charged BNP procession, arrested leaders

Update : 16 Nov 2017, 07:47 PM
Police have baton-charged BNP activists and arrested several leaders from a procession that was following party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s convoy going home from a special court, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged. He on Thursday said thousands of BNP supporters had gathered at Kodom Foara intersection, in front of National Eidgah Ground, to see Khaleda off to home from the court at Bakshibazar. When her motorcade passed that area, police had stopped the procession from moving forward. But as the BNP supporters ignored their directive, police gave a chase to disperse them. Agitating BNP supporters had vandalised several vehicles, including the car of a National Intelligence Agency official, at the time, said witnesses. Rizvi claimed at least 25-30 people were injured after police baton-charged BNP leaders and activists. “They also arrested several leaders from the scene.” On Thursday morning, the BNP chief appeared before the special court in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases. A vehicle carrying Khaleda arrived in the court premises around 11:47am. On October 27, the former prime minister had given partial statement before the court in the Zia Orphanage Trust case. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed this case in 2008 against six people, including Khaleda and her eldest son Tarique Rahman, for allegedly misusing Tk2.1 crore from the Orphanage Trust’s funds. Later in 2011, the ACC accused the BNP chief and three others of misappropriating Tk3.15 crore from the Zia Charitable Trust Fund.
