Khaleda has no assets in Saudi Arabia, says Mirza Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has vehemently refuted government allegations that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her family members own assets abroad, calling them “baseless”. “We have verified the information across the world and found the allegations baseless. Even the property that they [the government] are talking about does not exist,” he said during a blanket distribution programme organized by BNP's Dhaka South city unit on the High Court Mazar premises in Dhaka on Monday. The program was organized to mark BNP Senior Vice-Chairman and Khaleda's elder son Tarique Rahman’s 53rd birthday.

Mirza Fakhrul further alleged that the ruling party was spreading propaganda against Khaleda and her family members only to confuse people. Asked about Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader’s comment that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina take a shot in the dark without knowing the information about Khaleda’s assets abroad, he said the government should prove the allegations if it can. On Thursday, the prime minister expressed discontent saying the mainstream media was not running any report on Khaleda Zia’s assets in Saudi Arabia. According to some media reports based on information by Global Intelligence Network and Canadian TV channel The National, anti-corruption investigation in Saudi Arabia revealed that Khaleda and her family members own have assets there.

Mirza Fakhrul also complained that the Awami League's mayoral candidate in the upcoming Rangpur City Corporation election and its local leaders were repeatedly violating the electoral code of conduct. “We have joined the Rangpur City Corporation election as we are a pro-election party, but the ruling party is violating election rules. We have already talked to the Election Commission about it,” he added. The BNP leader said their party hoped that the Election Commission would take proper steps to hold a fair and credible election in the Rangpur City Corporation, scheduled to take place on December 21.
