Nasim: Poll-time cabinet will be smaller
Awami League presidium member Mohammed Nasim has said the next general elections will be held under an administration led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, but that the size of the Cabinet will be “smaller than the existing one”. Speaking after a meeting with 14-party alliance at Awami League president's office in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area Monday, Nasim, also the health minister, insisted there is no scope for acting beyond the constitution. “Those who are evoking debate in this regard have a far-sighted plan to kill the prime minister,” he said. Nasim, who is the spokesperson of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance, further said the next parliamentary election is not about selecting MPs or Ministers. “This is an election for protecting our national existence and the conscience of the Liberation War,” he said.

Nasim accused BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia of provoking opposition forces by verbally attacking the prime minister and the government. He demanded a fair investigation of the graft allegations brought against Khaleda Zia. Dilip Barua, former industries minister and general secretary of Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal, presided over the meeting where leaders from the alliance parties were present. Information Minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haq Inu said: “Khaleda Zia has made corruption an art. She and her allies had killed people and made huge corruption during their tenure.”

Separately, Tariqat Federation Chairman Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizvandary expressed solidarity with Palestine over the recent move by Washington to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. “We have been supporting Palestine since Mujib era. The decision made by Trump should be withdrawn and the world leaders need to come forward to solve this crisis,” he said. The recent price hike of various commodities was also discussed in the meeting, with the alliance leaders urging the government to keep the prices down so that people can buy and eat properly.
