Khaleda verdict: AL to stay on Dhaka streets to thwart BNP
The ruling Awami League’s leaders and activists will take up positions at all entry points of the capital from February 7 to 9 to deal with the BNP fearing that the arch political rivals would attempt to create unrest over the verdict in a graft case against Khaleda Zia. On February 8, a Dhaka court will deliver its verdict in Zia Orphanage graft case against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. If convicted, she will have to face life imprisonment. BNP has claimed that the government is trying to influence the court. Sources from Awami League and its affiliated organisations told the Dhaka Tribune that BNP will try to create unrest following the verdict and it has already started to mobilise its activists from outside of the capital. They claimed that BNP activists from different parts of the country have already started entering Dhaka and the influx will continue. To bar BNP activists from entering the capital, Awami League senior leaders already directed activists to remain guarded at all entry points of Dhaka between February 7 and 9. Senior leaders from the ruling party said the BNP will try to take control of Dhaka streets after February 8 but Awami League will make an all-out effort to keep them off streets of the capital until the next national elections. A presidium member of Awami League seeking anonymity said his party will not allow BNP on the streets. That’s why leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies have been instructed to stay on every street. A central leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League said that they have already been directed to stay in Jatrabari, Konapara, Demra, Donia, Shyampur, Azimpur, Shantinagar, Badda, Mirpur and other places to bar BNP activists. Shah Alam Murad, general secretary of Dhaka South Awami League unit, said: “Awami League has no plan to provoke or engage in any clash with BNP supporters, but we will stop them on the streets if they try to create mayhem.” Sadek Khan, general secretary of Dhaka North unit Awami Legue, said: “We will make a concrete plan for party men to stay alert on the streets to thwart BNP.”
