Two Bangladesh Chhatra League activists were beaten by their fellow activists at Dhaka University Friday afternoon.
The victims are Sagar Rahman and Maskat Hossan, two students of the university’s philosophy department.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Maskat accused Imran Hossain Sagor, deputy office secretary of Mastarda Surya Sen Hall and the hall’s Chhatra League activists, of attacking them at the university's Mall Chattar.
"Those who oppose holding the 29th central council of Chhatra League carried out the attack," Maskat alleged.
Imran apart, around 40 Chhatra League activists, who are the followers of Chhatra League’s Surya Sen Hall unit president Golam Sarowar, joined the attack that left five people including the two injured, according to DU sources.
The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Sarowar, however, denied his involvement in the infighting, pledging to take “organizational steps” against any of his fellows found to be involved in the incident.
DU Chhatra League president Abid Al Hasan said those claiming to be victims were actually “trying to confuse the role of the ruling party’s student front, spreading false and fabricated information concerning the council".
He said: "If any Chhatra League leaders or activists are trying to make chaos in the organization, obviously we'll take steps against them.”
On Thursday, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader instructed the Chhatra League central leaders at Madhur Canteen to take preparations for the council on March 31.
