BNP: Celebration of LDC graduation a mockery
The government-sponsored celebrations of Bangladesh’s impending graduation to developing country status were dismissed by the BNP on Thursday as “nothing but a mockery with people”. At a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters in Dhaka, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi levelled a series of failings against the Awami League government which he said undermined the planned promotion in status. He said: “Corruption, plundering and bribery have marked a sharp rise in the country, Tk100 crore is being spent on a task worth Tk1 crore (and) the unemployment rate is the highest in Bangladesh among the South Asian countries. Are these the signs of development?” On Thursday, the government announced a program of events to celebrate the declaration by the UN Committee for Development Policy on March 16 that Bangladesh had fulfilled all three criteria required for graduation from the bloc of least developed countries (LDCs). “The underlying objective of celebrating this eligibility is to overcome the next electoral hurdle,” Rizvi said. “This is nothing but a mockery with people.” A member of the BNP Standing Committee, the party’s highest policy-making body, Rizvi alleged that the ruling Awami League had illegally forced government employees to join the program. Before it can be officially elevated to developing country status, Bangladesh will have to undergo two more reviews in 2021 and 2024 to formally exit the bloc.
