BNP rally in Dhaka: Permission comes after postponement

Update : 28 Mar 2018, 09:38 PM
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Wednesday granted BNP the permission to hold its planned rally at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) on Thursday. "We allowed BNP to hold its rally at IEB on March 30," said DMP commissioner M Asaduzzaman Miah. He added that in every case police granted permission for rallies after "threat assessments" on the basis of intelligence reports and taking into account the issue of public security. The permission came hours after BNP had postponed the rally alleging that the authorities intentionally delayed deciding whether to allow the party to hold it. Earlier, the BNP sought permission for holding its rally at Suhrawardi Uddyan on March 29, but the threat assessment report did not "allow us to grant them the permission to hold it at their chosen venue". On March 27, a-three member delegation comprising BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan , and vice chairmen Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and Air Vice Marshal (retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury met with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, seeking permission for holding their rally. The minister at that time said whether or not BNP will be allowed to hold the rally depends on the DMP because law enforcement agencies are responsible for ensuring public security.
