BNP on Tuesday claimed that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had launched an investigation into “false and politically-motivated” allegations of suspicious bank transactions by eight of its top leaders as part of “foul play” by the government to mislead people and weaken the party.
"The allegations that have been brought against us are part of the government's blueprint. This is nothing but a baseless, false, fabricated and politically-motivated campaign to malign BNP," said party Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
Speaking at a press conference at BNP's Naya Paltan central office, he also said the move was taken as the government is trying to play another “foul game” to keep BNP out of the next general election. "We strongly protest and condemn such false propaganda."
He urged the government to refrain from carrying out such a “filthy campaign” against its opponents.
According to media reports, the ACC has launched a probe into allegations of suspicious bank transactions by eight top BNP leaders in a month.
The BNP leaders are Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, party Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Nazrul Islam Khan, vice-chairmen M Morshed Khan and Abdul Awal Mintoo, joint secretary general Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel and executive committee member Tabith Awal.
Referring to the report, Mosharraf said the ACC had found suspicious transactions through his bank account with Dutch-Bangla Bank.
"I would like to let the nation and the ACC know that my family members and I have never had any account with Dutch-Bangla Bank. This shows how false, fictitious and politically motivated the report is,” the BNP Standing Committee member said.
He warned that people would neither be confused by such “false allegations” nor would they allow the government to stage “another drama” in the name of polls as they did in 2014.
Meanwhile, Nazrul Islam Khan said the ACC had brought an allegation that he had made a transaction of over Tk7 crore.
“I don’t think I’ve made such a large transaction in my entire life. This is a kind of vulgar mockery by the government to defame us (BNP),” he added.
He claimed that the ACC was being used as a “weapon of the government.”
Amir Khosru alleged that Awami League has opened 25 news portals, including Bangla Insider, to spread propaganda against BNP leaders. "You may see more such false campaigns in the days to come."
Mintoo said he does make large transactions as he is a businessman. "But the allegations brought against me are false and imaginary. I've seen in the report that many account numbers with different banks have been mentioned as places where I carried out suspicious transactions. But I don't have accounts with most of those banks."
