AL’s Jahangir richest of Gazipur city polls candidates
The annual income of Awami League candidate Md Jahangir Alom is several times higher than the combined yearly earnings of the eight other aspirants contesting the Gazipur City Corporation elections. BNP candidate Md Hasan Uddin Sarkar is the second richest. Both Jahangir and Hasan are businessmen. While the former has shown his annual income to be Tk2.16 crore, the latter’s yearly earning is Tk10.97 lakh, according to affidavits they submitted to the returning officer with their nomination papers. Yet both are in debt as well. Hasan has loans of Tk2.67 lakh, while Jahangir has a loan of Tk8 crore. According to the affidavit, Jahangir earns Tk94.2 lakh from his business every year while Hasan earns only Tk3.73 lakh. Jahangir earns Tk4.3 lakh from the rent of his house or shops, Tk1.5 lakh from agriculture, and another Tk1.16 crore from other sources. On the other hand, Hasan earns Tk5.23 lakh from house and shop, Tk63,000 from agriculture, and Tk1.39 lakh from other sources. Jahangir’s movable property, including two firearms and shares in two companies, is worth Tk8.88 crore. He has two cars and 35 bhori of gold. His immovable properties include 1,415.15 decimal agricultural land and 33.7124 decimal non-agricultural land, in addition to 7.4376 decimal in residential or business plots. Hasan, on the other hand, has movable properties worth Tk65.2 lakh including two firearms. He also has a car worth Tk22.5 lakh. His immovable properties include 500.531 decimal agricultural land worth Tk94,464, five shops on a 7.5 decimal plot, a tin-shed home worth Tk3 lakh and a semi-concrete building worth Tk25.63 lakh. Hasan also has 21 bhoris of gold of his own and 32 bhoris of gold belonging to his wife. He has also shown his wife’s immovable and movable properties. Jahangir has completed an MA in Law while Hasan has a bachelor’s degree.

Jahangir’s ‘concealed’ information

The Awami League candidate allegedly has been spending money on campaigning from his ‘Jahangir Foundation.’ But he did not mention the foundation in his affidavit. “I did not do anything illegal,” he told Dhaka Tribune over the phone. “This is my personal foundation. I help the poor without receiving anything in return. I am not doing anything wrong. There is no reason to mention it in the affidavit.” Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam disagreed. He said there was no limit on how much a candidate can earn, but all information must be included in the affidavit. “Candidacy can be cancelled if they provide false information in the affidavit. Even after being elected, they can be disqualified.” TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said: “If one candidate makes about Tk11 lakh and another earns more than Tk2 crore, there is a clear disadvantage.” “But we must check if both have stated all their income, and what the sources of their incomes are.” He said: “If there is more money, it can lead to abuse of power and affect the level playing field. Therefore, accountability must be ensured in this case.”
