Awami League urges Britain to send Tarique Rahman back
Ruling Awami League has once again urged the British government to send back BNP’s Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman, who was convicted by two separate courts on multiple corruption charges. Awami League’s Organizing Secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, who is currently acting as the party’s general secretary due to Obaidul Quader’s absence, made the plea at a press briefing at the party president’s office in Dhanmondi. "Tarique Rahman is a convicted criminal by multiple Bangladeshi courts. So he shouldn't be sheltered in the United Kingdom.” He also described BNP's senior Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi as a “hydraulic-talking doll.”

Swapon said: "Tarique Rahman has destroyed BNP, the Zia family and the country's democracy." In response to Rizvi’s earlier remark that Awami League should prove that Tarique Rahman has given up his Bangladeshi citizenship, Swapan said BNP leaders should prove that Tarique is still in possession of his Bangladeshi passport. Earlier in the day, Tarique Rahman's lawyer sent a legal notice to State Minister of Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, asking to apologise for his comment that Tarique Rahman has surrendered his Bangladeshi passport. Among others, Awami League Information and Research Secretary Afzal Hossain, Deputy Office Secretary Biplob Barua, Executive Members Iqbal Hossain Opu and Anwar Hossain were present at the press briefing.
