Obaidul: Foreign powers can't put anyone in state power
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said no foreign powers can bring any party into state power as only the people of the country are the sole authority to install any party in power through exercising their right to vote. "No foreign powers can bring anyone into power. Foreigners can be our friends. But it is completely dependent on the people to put anyone in power," he told a press conference at the party president's Dhanmondi political office in Dhaka on Thursday after a secretariat meeting of the party. Obaidul, also the road transport and bridges minister, said if the country's people do not want, no one can stay in power by force. "It is impossible," he added. On the Awami League delegation’s recent visit to India, he said they did not discuss the 11th general elections during their meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "The visit was a party-to-party level one. Modi did not talk about the election. We talked how to further strengthen our relations," he said. He added that Awami League needed to maintain good relation with the party in power in India, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the greater national interest. Obaidul said during their visit to India, they talked about every important issue prevailing between the two countries, including the Teesta River water sharing treaty and the ongoing Rohingya crisis. "We drew the Indian prime minister’s attention about the problem we are facing due to paucity of water of Teesta River," he said. The ruling party general secretary said they had also invited BJP’s National General Secretary Ram Madhav to visit Bangladesh. About the upcoming Gazipur and Khulna city corporation elections, Obaidul said they urged their party leaders and activists not to violate the electoral code of conduct and said only the inhabitants of Gazipur and Khulna can take part in election campaigns in their respective city corporations.
