Obaidul Quader: Chhatra League will follow Bangabandhu’s ideology
Bangladesh Chhatra League will always follow the ideology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, says Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader. He made the remarks while addressing the council of Chhatra League’s Dhaka University (DU) unit at the university’s Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium on Sunday. “Do not allow opportunists and infiltrators to enter the organization as they will not stand by the organization during crisis,” he told the leaders and activists of the ruling party student wing. Obaidul, also the road transport and bridges minister, instructed Chhatra League leaders to elect through the council a new leadership that will work to ensure Awami League’s victory in the next national election. “Chhatra League will have to restore the organization’s dignity. Do not choose the new leaders or the committee for money. Talented and capable leaders, with the mentality to make necessary sacrifice, must lead the rest from the front. When you leave, think about how the new leaders will remember you. They will not respect you in future if you choose the leaders who take money,” he told the outgoing leadership. The council of DU Chhatra League unit has been organized two years after the current committee expired. The program on Sunday was supposed to be held in front of the Arts Building. But the venue was shifted to TSC following a two-hour delay due to bad weather. Addressing the council, Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak said: “The new leadership of DU Chhatra League will uphold the dignity of the university and lead Bangladesh into the future.” The ruling party’s Organizing Secretary AKM Enamul Haque Shamim also said Chhatra League’s DU unit was the most proactive unit of the organization and it would have to play a significant role in national politics as well as nation building. The council was inaugurated by Chhatra League President Saifur Rahman Sohag while General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain made the keynote speech. Outgoing DU Chhatra League President Abid Al Hasan had presided over the program that was moderated by General Secretary Motahar Hossain Prince. According to sources, the new DU unit committee would be announced after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League chief, returns home finishing her Australia trip, along with the new central committee of Chhatra League following its council slated for May 11-12.

‘Khaleda being treated as per jail code’

During his speech at Sunday’s program, Obaidul Quader also mentioned that incarcerated BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was being given the medical treatment following the jail code. “She is enjoying the medical facilities as per the jail code. The jail authorities, the home ministry and health ministry are overseeing her treatment,” he said. He said: “The government will take all necessary steps for her proper treatment according to the advice of the medical board.” While talking about BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman, Obaidul said: “He had gone abroad in the name of receiving treatment after saying that he will not be involved in the politics.” “Tarique does not have the courage to face imprisonment. A fugitive and coward like him who cannot take to streets to wage movement cannot be accepted as the leader of Bangladesh,” said the Awami League leader.
