The Election Commission has redrawn 25 out of the 300 electoral constituencies ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election but left Dhaka unchanged following last week’s review hearings for the proposals.
Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam announced the decision at the Election Commission Media Centre on Monday.
He also said the election schedule will be declared in October, but did not specify a date.
The commission published the draft delimitation of constituencies on March 14 this year. It suggested changes to 40 constituencies, including Dhaka 2, 3, 7, 14, and 19.
Subsequently, hearings on complaints and appeals against the draft list were held from April 21-25, before the final list was announced on Monday.
The redrawn areas are: Nilphamari-3, Nilphamari-4, Rangpur-1, Rangpur-3, Kurigram-3, Kurigram-4, Sirajganj-1, Sirajganj-2, Khulna-3, Khulna-4, Jamalpur-4, Jamalpur-5, Narayanganj-4, Narayanganj-5, Sylhet-2, Sylhet-3, Moulvibazar-2, Moulvibazar-4, Brahmanbaria-5, Brahmanbaria-6, Cumilla-6, Cumilla-9, Cumilla-10, Noakhali-4, and Noakhali-5.
According to the 15th amendment to the constitution, the election has to be held 90 days before the expiry of the ruling government’s term.
The most recent parliamentary election was held on January 5, 2014, with the first session of the 10th National Parliament beginning on January 29.
As per the 15th amendment, therefore, the 11th parliamentary election has to be held by January 28, 2019.
Amid demands from BNP to dissolve parliament before the next national polls, Awami League leaders have claimed that the party will stay in power during election, but will only execute routine tasks, assist the Election Commission to arrange free and fair polls, and will not make any policy related decisions.
