Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urges the government to first arrest the Awami League men involved in drug peddling

BNP on Monday alleged that the government had been “indulging in extrajudicial killings” in the name of a countrywide anti-narcotics drive.

Speaking at an iftar event in Dhaka, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged the government to first arrest the Awami League men involved in drug peddling.

"A fresh drive to control narcotics has begun. We also want the country to be freed from drug abuse and those involved in it to be brought to justice. But it does not mean people should be killed unlawfully without any trial," he said.

"It's surely a good initiative that you are carrying out a drive against narcotics. But first arrest the drug peddlers in your own party and take action against them," he said addressing the government and the ruling party.

The BNP leader alleged that MP Abdur Rahman Bodi of Cox's Bazar's Teknaf had been running a drug trade after he was released from jail on bail. "Not only him, but also many other ruling party men at almost every place are involved in this business."

Fakhrul said the way the government was now killing people in crossfires, many opposition leaders and activists were also killed in the same way in the past unlawfully.

He said the government had kept BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail unlawfully in “false cases” and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam was creating obstacles for her in securing bail from the High Court.

He said the current government was ruining the country's economy by indulging in widespread corruption and plundering. "They are looting huge amount of money in the name of mega projects."

The BNP secretary general urged all to get united to restore democracy and people's rights by ensuring the fall of the current government.

Khelafat Majlish, a member of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, arranged the iftar at a hotel in the city's Jatiya Krira Parishad Bhaban.

Top leaders of the coalition had joined the iftar.
