BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said 181 of their party members have been detained across Bangladesh after the Election Commission allocated symbols to political parties.

“BNP leaders and activists are being detained all over Bangladesh. They are tortured by Awami League people,” he said in a press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters on Wednesday.

Earlier on Monday, the commission allocated symbols to political parties contest the upcoming 11th general election.

Rizvi also condemned the arrest of BNP leader Ruhul Quddus Dulu.

Detective Branch of Police arrested Dulu from his Gulshan residence in Dhaka on Wednesday in a case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.

Rizvi said the government has shut down BD.com, a web portal which was established by jailed BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

He said the government wants to keep BNP away from the election, slated for December 30.

BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed, who was also present at the briefing, said a level playing field has not yet created.

“But, we will be in the field until the last moment,” Moudud said.

He said there is lack of election atmosphere in his constituency, Noakhali 5.
