She says Awami League has made it clear in the last 10 years that their sole objective is to serve the people

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged recently elected MPs of the BNP to join parliament for the sake of democracy and to utilize the scope for their return to constructive politics.

"BNP should join parliament for the sake of democracy, accepting its defeat in the election," she said on Saturday.

She made the remarks during the introductory speech at a joint meeting of Awami League’s Advisory Council and Central Working Committee at the party's Bangabandhu Avenue central office in Dhaka.

The meeting was held in the afternoon with Awami League President Hasina in the chair.

She also asked BNP higher-ups to take the right decision to practise democracy, considering the status of the party, including lack of proper leadership, anti-independence destructive politics, organizational weakness, and nomination trading.

"They [BNP and Jatiya Oikya Front] have to accept their defeat in the election as they were incapable of picking their leader.

“BNP lost the election for running the party with an absconding fugitive at its helm," she said, hinting at acting BNP chief Tarique Rahman who currently lives in London.

Hasina said, although the BNP suffered defeat for lack of leadership, the scenario might have been better had they not indulged in nomination trading.

She also said that the most remarkable side of the 11th general election, held on December 30, was the enthusiasm of the voters — especially the youth, new voters and women — in exercising their franchise.

‘AL only serves’

Addressing Saturday’s joint meeting, Sheikh Hasina said the Awami League has made it clear to the nation in the last 10 years that their sole objective is to serve the people.

“The people chose us in the last election as the Awami League has been able to establish that it’s only goal is to improve their lives,” she said.

She expressed gratitude to the people for putting their trust and confidence in Awami League once again. “This landslide win has also increased our responsibility to the people a lot.”

"We have only one thing [in mind], that we have to implement all of our development programs to improve the socioeconomic status of the people. We have to think of what sort of programs we will undertake to improve the lifestyle of people," she said.

The Awami League chief last week formed the government for a fourth time and a consecutive third term after her party-led Grand Alliance won 287 of 299 seats in the general election.

About the government's future plans, she added that rural people will get urban facilities. "The socioeconomic condition of the country is improving and it will continue. The income disparity will be reduced, the fate of the grassroots will be upgraded... We are initiating programs keeping these things in mind."

She also placed emphasis on strengthening the Awami League further.
