'Political influence not only helps spread corruption, but also makes people indifferent to the law, which ultimately hampers the rule of law. This is applicable for all sectors, including transport,' Dr Kamal said

Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain has urged the government to free the transport sector from political influence and implement laws more strictly, to bring discipline to the sector.

The Gono Forum chief made the demand during a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Saturday.

"Political influence not only helps spread corruption, but also makes people indifferent to the law, which ultimately hampers the rule of law. This is applicable for all sectors, including transport," Dr Kamal said.

He added that the main reason behind the prevailing anarchy in the transport sector is a lack of good governance. "It's necessary to ensure impartial and effective enforcement of laws to ensure good governance."

Dr Kamal, also the convener of Jatiya Oikya Front, further said police must enforce laws to ensure that the goal for which they were framed can be achieved. “If the police are influenced by anybody, then they become weaker and deviate from the rule of law.”

Human chain for safer roads

Gono Forum will form a human chain program in the capital on April 1 to push for its 14-point demand for ensuring safe roads and restoration of discipline in the transport sector.

Gono Forum General Secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu made the announcement at a press conference at the National Press Club on Saturday.

The program, scheduled to be held in front of the National Press Club in Segunbagicha, is also meant for registering the party's protest against the government's move to hike gas tariffs.

"We took to the streets demanding safe roads earlier when students waged a movement to this end. We are also going to form a human chain from 3pm to 5pm in front of the Jatiya Press Club on April 1 with the same demand in line with the students and youths," he said.

He urged the people of all walks of life, including students, to participate in the program and make it a success.
