Fakhrul: Khaleda's health still deteriorating

Khaleda has been in jail since February 8, 2018

Update : 27 Mar 2019, 03:45 PM

BNP has accused the prison authorities of neglecting the health of jailed party chief Khaleda Zia, claiming her condition has further deteriorated.

"The jail authorities are not paying due attention to Khaleda Zia's health condition," BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media at the party's Naya Paltan office on Wednesday.

"Relatives, who visited the former prime minister Tuesday, said her condition has worsened," said Fakhrul, claiming that there was a plot to kill Khaleda in jail by denying her the proper and necessary medical care.

Khaleda, a three-time former prime minister of Bangladesh, has been in jail since February 8, 2018, after she was convicted in a corruption case. Her five-year sentence was later doubled.

The BNP chairperson was also convicted in a separate corruption case later that year.

BNP leaders and activists claim the cases against the party chief are politically motivated and that the government is trying to keep her away from politics; meanwhile, the government denies all of these charges.

The party contested in the December 30 national polls, without Khaleda, and the ruling Awami League won 96% of seats.

The unconditional release of Khaleda has been her party's main objective ever since her incarceration.

Fakhrul mentioned that BNP chairperson is so ill that she cannot move independently.

"She is also complaining about pain in different parts of her body," he said.

The BNP leader alleged that the medical board formed at the High Court's order is not ensuring her treatment.

Fakhrul also expressed his concerns claiming that the government has not taken any steps to shift Khelada to a specialized hospital for treatment even after BNP's March 4 meeting with the home minister.

Fakhrul demanded the BNP chairperson be treated at a specialized hospital.

"If anything happens to her, the government, the jail authorities and the home ministry will have to take responsibility for it," he said.
