Suspended female Chhatra League member attempts suicide

She took several sleeping pills to take her own life as a response to her suspension from Chhatra League

Update : 21 May 2019, 08:50 PM

A female leader of the ruling party's student wing, Chhatra League, has attempted suicide after her suspension from the organization.

The incident occurred early on Tuesday.

Zarin Diya, a female leader of a Chhatra League faction, took some sleeping pills to take her own life.

Diya came to the limelight after she, along with some other deprived Chhatra League  activists, were attacked at  Dhaka University's Madhur Canteen  on May 13.

Later on Monday, she was suspended from the organization for her alleged involvement in the May-13 clash between two Chhatra League factions.

A former central committee member of Chhatra League, Diya is a resident student of Dhaka University's (DU) Ruqayyah hall.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Sub-Inspector (SI) Bacchu Mia, of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said: "Zarin was taken to the hospital on Tuesday night as she fell ill after taking some sleeping pills.

"Her stomach was washed and cleaned. Later, she was admitted to the hospital. She will be released soon."

Three hours after the notice of her suspension was issued for violating organizational code of conduct, Diya responded to the organization's directives on a Facebook status.

At least 15 deprived activists of Chhatra League were wounded in the attack, allegedly perpetrated by men patronized by party president Rezwanul Haque Choudhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani, on May 13.

They came under fresh attack allegedly by General Secretary Rabbani himself on Sunday.

On May 15, Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina instructed the leadership of the party’s student affiliate to drop the name of controversial leaders from its recently announced full-fledged central committee.

On Sunday, the deprived Chhatra League members, including show-caused Lipi Akhter, were allegedly attacked again by the organization’s general secretary and his followers inside DU’s Teacher-Student Centre.
