Leaders and activists of the units have urged the central leaders several times to form new committees, but in vain
Though ruling Awami League has been in office for the past 11 years, its affiliated organization Awami Swechchhasebak League’s Dhaka city units have been running with a 13-year-old committee.
On May 31, 2006, Swechchhasebak League’s Dhaka unit was divided into Dhaka north and Dhaka south units, and new committees were formed for the two units.
After six years of the convention, Swechchhasebak League’s central committee asked the two units to form a 101-member new committee. Around 13 years have passed after the central committee’s directive, but leaders of the organization are yet to form the new committees.
Not only the city’s two units, several thana units in the city have also not seen new committees for the last 16-17 years.
Leaders and activists of the units have urged the central leaders several times to form new committees, but in vain.
However, leaders of the central committee have claimed that they will form new committees of these units very soon.
According to sources in the Swechchhasebak League, delays in forming a committee is a very common issue for them.
A leader of the central Swechchhasebak League committee told the Dhaka Tribune that the committee before the last one was formed in 1994 and was in charge till 2006.
The thana unit committees of Mirpur and Dhaka Cantonment were formed in 2002 and 2006 respectively.
The leader also said the central committee of Swechchhasebak League was formed on July 27 in 2003.
When asked about forming a new committee, Swechchhasebak League Dhaka North unit President Mobassher Chowdhury declined to make any comment.
He also said that Swechchhasebak League is a platform for former student leaders to prepare themselves for national politics, but due to the delay of the committee, student leaders did not get any scope to be familiar with national politics.
Molla Md Abu Kawser, president of Swechchhasebak League central unit, said they are working on forming the new committees and it will be done very soon.
