A nationwide general strike is expected to be enforced from 6am to 2pm on July 7

BNP has expressed its support to the half-day nationwide general strike called by the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) in protest against the latest hike in gas prices.

Emerging after a meeting of the National Standing Committee of BNP at the chairperson’s Gulshan offices in Dhaka, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the statement on Friday.

“We morally support the leftist parties’ general strike set for July 7,” Mirza Fakhrul said.

He also said political parties have earlier observed protest rallies and demonstrations in district-towns and metropolitan areas on July 1, protesting gas price hike.

“People across Bangladesh have badly been affected by the gas price hike. Considering the fact, we believe the strike is a reasonable one. Therefore, we extend our moral support to the strike,” he added.

The gas price hike will take a heavy toll on the economy as price of essential household commodities at the retail level and industrial production costs per unit will soar by the gas price hike, said the BNP secretary general.

The Left Democratic Alliance (LDA), on July 1, announced a half-day general strike across the country on Sunday, July 7, protesting new hike in gas prices.

The half-day strike will be observed from 6am to 2pm.

Gono Forum, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Nagorik Oikya, Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP), Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports, Ganasamhati Andolon, Communist Party of Bangladesh, and a number of other political oppositions have already thrown their weight behind the general strike.

The government has recently raised the prices of gas again, despite persistent opposition from the consumer rights groups.

The gas prices were increased in eight categories, including that of household users, which became effective on July 1.

According to the latest announcement by Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), the new weighted average prices of gas at the consumer level is Tk9.8 per cubic foot, a staggering 32% increase from Tk7.38.
