Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said his party did not support extrajudicial killings.

“Encounter and crossfire are not similar topics. We did not find anything related to extrajudicial killings in the government’s or the Ministry of Home Affair’s statements. We do not support extrajudicial killings,” Quader said.

Obaidul Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said this while addressing a press conference at the party President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office in Dhaka.

The minister said that the home minister had described the killing of Nayan Bond, prime accused in the gruesome murder of Rifat Sharif in Barguna, as the result of a police encounter.

Replying to a query over gas price hike, the minister said: “There are reasons behind increasing the gas price. Whether the government will reconsider it or not, is its own decision.”

However, he claimed that there is no chance to reconsider the decision as government has already invested a lot of money in this sector.

Responding to another question over the prime minister’s China visit, Quader said the government would welcome those who came forward with the intent to make investments in Bangladesh for development.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping are giving priority to the Rohingya issue; it is the focal point of this tour.

“China has assured us of mounting pressure on Myanmar over the Rohingya issue, so the displaced people can go back to their own country with dignity,” he added.

On BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir’s reaction over Pabna court’s recent verdict that sentenced nine BNP men to death, 25 years of the attack on a train carrying the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina, Quader said BNP called court verdicts fabricated whenever they went against them.

“Accusing the court is not a new thing for the BNP. They speak according to their tradition and always try to shift burden to the government,” Quader said.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the verdict in the Pabna attack proved that there was no independence in the judiciary.
