Ershad's death brings anguish to Rangpur residents

People from all strata of society recalled and shared their memories with the former president

The death of Jatiya Party Chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad has brought anguish to the people of Rangpur, a northern district of Bangladesh.

Residents of the district, commonly known as the stronghold of the party, have expressed their condolences for the demise of the political figure.

The former president and a Chief Martial Law Administrator, HM Ershad breathed his last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka around 7:45am on Sunday.

Hearing the news of his death, people from all walks of life started to gather at the party office at Central Road in Rangpur city on Sunday. They also thronged at Ershad's two residences in the city to know about his funeral prayers and burial process. 

People from all strata of society recalled and shared their memories with the former president.

Shahanaz Parvin, a housewife, dubbed Ershad a friend of the poor. She expressed her gratitude to him, who helped her son to get a job.

A resident of Darshana, Sarwar, said the key attribute of Ershad was that he never broke a promise he gave.

He said: "Once I invited him to my house, when he gave me his word. He visited my home after three months."

With tears in his eyes, Jatiya Party activist Sohrab said he was indebted to the party chief in various ways. 

He said: "HM Ershad always helped me and my family when I was in trouble. It's really impossible for me to describe his role in my life."

Rickshaw puller Nabi Mia said Ershad is the pride of Rangpur. He and his party symbol, the plough, were inseparable.

"We loved him and cast our ballots for that very symbol."

Rangpur’s Carmichael College teacher Shahadat Hossain said Ershad had worked for the development of Rangpur, and expressed gratitude to the people of the district who always elected him in the general election.
