GM Quader has been announced as the new chairman of Jatiya Party (JaPa), following the death of his older brother and former president HM Ershad.

Sunil Shubho Roy, JaPa press and political secretary, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday afternoon.

He said GM Quader was made chairman in accordance to their party constitution, which says that the acting chairman will be officially made the chairman of Jatiya Party if the party chief passes away.

He further said no official meeting was held for the announcement, and that a new council will be formed in the future.

Meanwhile, the newly announced JaPa Chairman GM Quader, in an unscheduled press briefing at the Party Chairman’s office in Banani, expressed his gratitude to the people of Bangladesh for showing respect and affection for the departed soul of party founder and chairman HM Ershad.

He also said the party turn the sorrow of losing party founder Ershad into strength.

Due to the illness and death of the party chief, JaPa were unable to carry out any organizational work for the last month, he added, mentioning that the party would soon form an organizing committee and a committee for the divisional and district levels.

“It is certain that there is no political divide in the party, and the party will be operated with unity. We are united and will remain united,” GM Quader said.

JaPa Organizing Secretary Monirul Islam Milon said a meeting of presidium members will approve GM Quader’s appointment as chairman soon, but he did not specify a date for the meeting.

When asked about JaPa’s upcoming national council, he said: “We primarily decided to hold the council in December this year, and we will try on conduct it on time. However, after such a loss, it might be delayed by a few months.”

Former autocratic ruler HM Ershad breathed his last at 7:45am on Sunday, July 14, undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. The former president was laid to rest with state honours in the Lychee Orchard within the compound of Mokbul Hossain General and Diabetes Hospital, adjacent to his Palli Nibash in Darshana of Rangpur city on Tuesday, July 16.

In late January this year, Ershad issued a statement announcing GM Quader as the acting chairman of JaPa. In several subsequent statements to JaPa leaders, Ershad urged for GM Quader to be appointed as the full chairman at the party's next national council.
