PM to mayors: Dengue must be tackled at any cost

He said dengue infection and flood are the two major challenges faced by the ruling party

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered the two mayors of Dhaka city corporations to take steps to curb dengue at any cost.

He said dengue infection and flood are the two major challenges faced by the ruling party and the party is on alert to face these challenges. 

“Now, we have two challenges. We need to stay beside the flood affected people and rehabilitate them and also as prevent dengue,” Quader said while inaugurating Awami League’s relief distribution program for the flood affected people at Dhanmondi 32 on Sunday. 

Roads, Transport and Bridges Minister, Quader, said the government has taken massive program to curb dengue.

He said: “Government will take up more programs to make people aware of dengue.”

Replying to a question about BNP’s claim that government failed to do anything for flood affected people, the minister said Awami League does not do politics with flood. 

“Awami League government was always beside these people [flood affected] and will continue to do so. BNP is trying to grab people’s attention by spreading selfies and videos of their relief donation programs,” Quader said.

Quader also termed BNP’s Nayapaltan office as a rumour mill.

He said: “BNP has formed a team to spread rumours. Spreading rumours is their main motto as they have no other activities to do.”

Abdur Rahman, Awami League joint general secretary, urged BNP and other political parties to stand beside flood affected people instead of criticizing Awami League government.

Sujit Roy Nandi, Awami League social and relief affair secretary and coordinator of relief distribution program, also urged all the members of the party to stay beside flood affected people with their helping hands.

Earlier, Awami League formed six teams—compromising of its central leaders-- to distribute necessary items to flood affected people. 

Flood and dengue situation in Bangladesh

According to Health Emergency Operation Center and the Control Room of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) report, at least 114 people have died due to excessive flooding in 28 districts across Bangladesh in the last 17 days.

At least 95 people drowned in the affected areas during this period, till July 26.

On the other hand, the dengue virus is spreading its wings aggressively both in Dhaka and the outer districts.

A total of 683 new dengue infected patients were reported across Bangladesh till July 27.

A total of 10,528 dengue patients have been hospitalized from January 1 to July 27, with eight deaths so far this year.
