He claimed most JaPa leaders were on his side

Former MP Hossain Maqbool Shahriar Asif, nephew of late Jatiya Party (JaPa) chairman Ershad, has submitted nomination papers to run for the by-polls of Rangpur-3 constituency as an independent candidate.

He handed over the nomination papers to Returning Officer and Regional Election Officer GM Shahatab Uddin on Monday.

While speaking to the reporters, Asif said he did not want, nor did he apply for, the party's nomination, as he knew that the Jatiya Party leaders would treat him unfairly.

However, he claimed that most of the party leaders were on his side.

"It does not matter who they nominate, even if it is Saad (Ershad's eldest son); I will win at the polls," Asif further declared.

Meanwhile, candidates of Awami League, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jatiya Party will submit their nomination papers later in the evening.

On Sunday, Jatiya Party nominated Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad, eldest son of the party’s  founding chairman late HM Ershad, and party co-chairman Raushan Ershad, to contest the upcoming by-polls for Rangpur 3 constituency.

Awami League nominated Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju, the general secretary of Rangpur district Awami League, to contest the by-election, while BNP picked Rita Rahman, chief of People's Party of Bangladesh, one of the components of the 20-party alliance, as its candidate.

On Sept 1, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for the Rangpur by-polls.

Voting of the by-election will be held on October 5, using the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) across the constituency.

As per the schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is September 9, while the date for scrutinizing those is September 11, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is September 16.

The election will begin at 9am and continue till 5 pm.

A total of 4,42,072 people are scheduled to exercise their franchise in the election. Of them, 221,310 are men, and 220, 762 women.

The Rangpur 3 constituency fell vacant after the death of Jatiya Party Chairman, and leader of the opposition, Hussain Muhammad Ershad, who passed away at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on July 14 while undergoing treatment.

The Election Commission has a constitutional obligation to complete the by-polls of constituency within 90 days after it falls vacant.
