The minister will provide full support if the party chooses a new candidate as the party’s general secretary
The Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said he wishes to remain the Awami League General Secretary for as long as the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wants.
He made this remark while discussing his future position in the party at a press briefing, held at the secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.
"The general secretary’s post holds an important role in the party, which is why the party's chairperson takes all the decisions regarding the candidacy," Quader said.
"People get this post after sacrificing a lot; however, I felt extremely lucky and proud when Sheikh Hasina chose me as the party's general secretary," the minister expressed his gratitude.
Quader also said that he would welcome any new, eligible candidate for the general secretary post if the prime minister wished for any replacement.
"Despite my illness, I have always tried to fulfill my responsibilities towards the party, and I plan to continue doing so," he said. "I will render my full support if the party chooses a new candidate for the general secretary post."
According to the Awami League's Central Committee Meeting on Saturday, the 26th National Conference of the Awami League is set to be held on December 23 and 26. The party gets a new central committee body every three years.
