In an interesting turn of events, President of the Workers Party of Bangladesh, Rashed Khan Menon, has said Bangladesh’s voters were deprived of exercising their franchise in the last parliamentary election.

“I was elected (as a lawmaker) in the last national election. Regardless, I testify that the people could not cast their votes in the election. Similar incidents occurred in the subsequent upazila and union parishad polls,” he claimed.

Menon, who served at separate ministries during the ruling Awami League’s last tenure, was speaking as chief guest at a Barisal Town Hall party program Saturday afternoon.

Posing a question to the prime minister, he asked: “Why are the people failing to vote in union and upazila parishad polls, and general election despite you [the people] and me fighting for the right to vote?”

Menon, a Dhaka 8 constituency MP, went on to say that development does not mean endangering democracy, suppressing freedom of speech, and squeezing shut dissenting voices.

He also said irregularities are in full swing at development projects, depriving the people of their expected benefits from various development ventures.

Menon—who was served legal notice on September 25 for being the governing body chairman of Fakirapool Young Mens’ Club, where a casino was being run—also criticized the ongoing anti-graft crackdown.

“Casino owners and kingpins, and the corrupt are being detained, but the principal areas and causes of these problems continue as usual. When will those corrupt people be held, tried, and their properties confiscated?” he questioned.

The event was also addressed by his party colleagues of Barisal city and district units, and local left-leaning political leader.
