Without specifying any names, Barrister Nowfel observed that those who had failed to carry forward effective protest programs, have now taken to the campus streets to undermine peace on campuses, with protest movements as an excuse

Deputy Minister for Education, Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel has said any move to stir up unrest at Jahangirnagar University (JU) in the name of a protest movement against alleged corruption will face actions including legal consequences.

"Everybody has a right to protest, but nobody has the right to create any chaos and disorder," the junior minister said this, addressing an emergency press conference held at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka on Saturday.

Without specifying any names, Barrister Nowfel observed that those who had failed to carry forward effective protest programs, have now taken to the campus streets to undermine peace on campuses, with protest movements as an excuse.

"We have intelligence information that some behind the scenes operatives are trying to create violence in the name of movement in JU campus after conceding failure in the anti-government movement," he said.

Awami League lawmaker from Chittagong-9 constituency, Barrister Nowfel said the issue of funding in the university's development projects is still pending: against this backdrop their allegations are irrelevant and unsubstantiated.

"Steps will be taken against demonstrators if they [protesters] fail to prove allegations," he added.

To sound a note of warning, he said there will be administrative action against the JU vice chancellor if the allegations are proved to be true in the official investigation.

In a similar statement on Thursday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the people raising allegations of corruption against the vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University will face legal consequences if they fail to substantiate their claims.

Earlier on Friday, four teachers of Jahangirnagar University submitted a written complaint to Dr Abdul Alim Khan, personal secretary of Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni.

"We have not received a copy of the complaint yet, although it was reportedly submitted. We will form an inquiry committee to investigate the allegations. If the allegations are found to be true, action will be taken," said Nowfel.

Responding to a query, he said some of the JU faculty members by differing markedly from what is considered normal or acceptable, have exposed their moral turpitude with their engagement in the movement.

"We have enough information about who plotted conspiracies against whom and what was the outcome in the recent dramatic turn of events," he warned.

The junior minister said the government will not tolerate any irregularities and corruption.
