BNP picks Abu Sufian for Chittagong 8 by-polls

The Chittagong 8 seat fell vacant following the death of Mainuddin Khan Badal

BNP has picked Abu Sufian for contesting the upcoming by-polls of Chittagong 8 constituency slated for January 13.

Edris Ali, BNPs Chittagong city chapter office secretary, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.

He said:“BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and BNP Standing Committee members took interview of three nomination aspirants Abu Sufian, ErshadUllah and Mostaque Ahmed Khan.

“Later, Sufian was selected to contest the by-polls as the BNP candidate.”

Sufian is the senior vice-president of BNP Chittagong city chapter.

The Chittagong 8 seat fell vacant following the death of Mainuddin Khan Badal, the executive president of a faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal.

On November 7, Badal passed away at a hospital in India's Bangalore.

As per the Election Commission schedule, the last date of submitting the nomination paper is December 12, while scrutinizing of the nomination papers will be held on December 15.

December 22 is the deadline for withdrawal of candidature.
