Quader to Chhatra League: Reputation must be restored

'Some actions and activities of the Chhatra League have tarnished the achievements of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina'

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has urged Chhatra League leaders and activists to restore the organization's lost reputation.

He made the remarks while addressing an orientation course of Chhatra League members at the party's central office at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue on Wednesday evening.

"The Chhatra League's name has lately been associated with infamous incidents. Bringing the organization back to its fame is our first and foremost objective,” said Quader, who is also minister for road transport and bridges.

He said: "Some actions and activities of the Chhatra League have tarnished the achievements of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Whenever the common people begin to appreciate and admire the efforts made and developments brought about by our prime minister, the Chhatra League does something that spoils everything. We get into a lot of trouble because of these incidents.

"This is not what we expect from this organization."

"The Chhatra League does not need activists like the ones who killed Buet student Abrar. The government will not take responsibility for the misdeeds of a few,” Quader warned.

Quader, a former president of the ruling party student wing, was also critical of the lifestyle of top Chhatra League leaders. The present leaders of the Chhatra League, he said, did not wake up on time in the morning.

"Chhatra League activists do not wear helmets while riding motorbikes alongside motorcades. This is a matter of great shame for us and also for me personally as I am the road transport and bridges minister," Quader added.

Acting president of Chhatra League Al-Nahean Khan Joy, presided over the orientation course while top Awami League leaders Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, BM Mozammel, and Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury spoke at the event.

Chhatra League acting general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee conducted the program.
