'We will take the next course of action as per the acting chairman's instructions'
BNP activists should not form crowds wherever party Chairperson Khaleda Zia receives treatment, in order to reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.
The BNP secretary general made the comment in his immediate reaction following the government decision to conditionally release Khaleda Zia, suspending her conviction orders for six months.
Regarding the BNP chairperson's treatment, Fakhrul said: "One of the conditions for Khaleda Zia's release is that she cannot go abroad for treatment. We will decide on the matter after speaking to the doctors treating her.
"We will take the next course of action as per the acting chairman's instructions and following a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee," he added.
When asked if the party was taking the chairperson's release as a positive, Fakhrul said: "We will examine the matter."
The BNP chairperson has been in jail since she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. She was convicted in another corruption case later the same year, though her party claims both cases are politically motivated.
Khaleda has been receiving treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital since April 1, 2019.
