Only time will say what will be done in the future, says Ganasanghati Andolon Chief Coordinator Saki

A new political alliance led by Zonayed Saki of Ganasanghati Andolon and former Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur of Bangladesh Students' Rights Council may emerge soon.

The possibility of a fresh political alliance to challenge the government comes following the two leaders’ meeting on the 44th death anniversary program of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani at the Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune about the initiative, Ganasanghati Andolon Chief Coordinator Saki said: “We --- Bhashani Onushari Parishad, Rashtrochinta, Ganasanghati Andolon and Bangladesh Students' Rights Council --- held a program marking the death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani.

“To re-establish democracy in Bangladesh, we want to establish greater unity as well as a comprehensive movement and to this end we are discussing with each other – we who stand against government repression – how we can work together.”

“The decision of forming a political new coalition is yet to be taken; we are now just continuing our discussion on working for the greater interest.

“We are now focusing on re-establishing democracy. Now, anything is possible, such as the formation of a new alliance or a new party – with people of the same ideologies,” he added.

“Only time will say what will be done in the future,” he added.

Meanwhile, according to sources, Nur is willing to create greater unity of all anti-Awami League political bodies, excluding the Jamaat-e-Islami, which lost its political party status last year.

“We need to be unified if we want to get free of the repression of the ruling undemocratic and autocratic government.

“Although we are not a big political party, if we get the opportunity then we will work for greater unity,” said Nur, joint convener of the Bangladesh Students' Rights Council.

“We attended and organized the death anniversary program of Maulana Bhashani as we have at least some understanding among us,” the former Ducsu VP told Dhaka Tribune.

“Not only Ganasanghati Andolon, if necessary, we will create an alliance with the BNP in a bid to recover the country’s democracy,” stated the ex-Ducsu VP.

Criticizing the nature of unity in the Oikya Front (formed before the 2018 general polls), Nur said: “But the environment of unity there [in Oikya Front] is absent at present.”

Contacted, Md Rashed Khan, acting convenor of Bangladesh Students' Rights Council, said: “We haven’t yet allied with Ganasanghati Andolon but we are working to form our own political party named Gono Odhikar Parishad.”

“Regardless of all parties and their interests, all organizations need to unite around some common demands. They can be brought under a common platform led by the youth,” Rashed added.
