He accuses Obaidul Quader of crafting plots
As he continues to make the headlines, Basurhat Municipality Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza, in an interesting turn of events, has said he may commit suicide if Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader keeps what he calls hatching conspiracies against him.
Mirza, who is a local unit leader of the ruling party and the younger brother of Obaidul Quader, made the threat through a Facebook live status on Tuesday morning.
“I’ve come to know from credible sources that Obaidul and his wife have been plotting my forcible hospitalization exactly the way (former military ruler) HM Ershad was taken to a hospital at night.
“This is so unfortunate. I’m telling people that I’ll commit suicide if something like that happens to me,” he said.
Repeating the threat, he vowed not to “bow” to untruth.
He went live around 11am amid a series of events that have been coming to the fore since he launched his municipal polls race. He has since been accusing some central Awami League leaders, including Obaidul, and even the local administration of thwarting his efforts to win the election held on January 16.
“…. There have been conspiracies against me, stretching all the way from Dhaka to my locality (in Noakhali). Nobody except Allah, some dedicated leaders and activists and locals are with me now,” he said.
Many party men, Mirza claimed, had parted company with him upon learning of the truth from him.
“But I’m not scared of that. Rather I’m getting more encouraged now. Those involved with armed groups, tender manipulations and land grabbers are not with me now,” he said.
Talking of police obstruction over a memorial meeting for the recently deceased BNP leader Moudud Ahmed, Mirza called for an inquiry to find out who had actually been behind it.
“What will you do now? Will you kill me? Will you get me jailed or assaulted? Or anything else?” he questioned Obaidul Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister.
Mirza went on saying that Obaidul had “unleashed” several local influential Awami League leaders, including Noakhali-4 MP Ekramul Haque Chowdhury, against him.
The Basurhat municipality mayor further said Obaidul Quader and his wife had asked the administration to implicate his followers in false cases and harass them on the pretext of raids.
