He alleges BNP, Jamaat and fundamentalist groups wanted to make the country a Taliban state

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has said that the BNP is deceiving the people over the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman as his body is not there.

“This is an un-Islamic work… The issue was discussed in the Jatiya Sangsad on Saturday. The BNP is cheating the people as Zia’s body is not there,” he told reporters at his official residence in the city before leaving for New Delhi on an official visit.

Secretary of the Ministry for Information and Broadcasting Md Mokbul Hossain was present.

Also the Awami League joint general secretary, Hasan Mahmud said no one saw the dead body of Ziaur Rahman. “I’ve newspaper clippings of that time on my mobile phone. It was reported that nobody had witnessed the body of Zia.”

Some army personnel killed military strongman Ziaur Rahman in a failed coup at the Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981. He went to the port city the previous day to solve an internal feud of the party.

The minister said that Zia’s elder son Tarique Rahman had been wailing to see the body, “but he was not allowed. Even, Begum Khaleda Zia didn’t see the body. Nobody witnessed the dead body of Zia.”

Citing the witness statement of a former chairman and witness, Jahir of Rangunia, Hasan Mahmud said that Zia’s coffin had been exhumed but they did not see the body.

The minister said the people would judge it.

“Let them prove as they claim. But, they didn’t do that. Earlier, the BNP used to visit the place [grave] on special days. But, now they are visiting the place every week and sometimes fighting,” he added.

He alleged that the BNP, Jamaat and fundamentalist groups wanted to make the country a Taliban state, as they had patronized the militants.

About the implementation of clean feed of foreign TV channels, the minister said that a meeting was held recently with the authorized distributors of foreign channels, cable operators and DTH service providers.

Actions would be taken if they did not run ad-free (clean feed) contents of foreign TV channels from October 1, he warned.

A circulation has been issued to deposit to the government’s treasury Tk200,000 for every foreign artiste for making advertisements and Tk20,000 for screening the ads, according to the minister.

During his India visit, Hasan Mahmud is expected to return home on September 9 after holding meetings with the Indian foreign minister, the information and broadcasting minister, and the foreign secretary.
