Fakhrul says Zafrullah criticized the appointment of Tarique Rahman as BNP’s acting chairman

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has slammed Gonoshasthaya Kendra Founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury for his recent remark on BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and urged him to not talk nonsense in public.

During a recent program at the National Press Club, Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury criticized the decision to appoint Tarique Rahman as the BNP’s acting chairman, saying it was a breach of the party’s constitution.

Talking to reporters on Monday at his residence in Thakurgaon, Fakhrul maintained that the decision was very much in accordance with the party constitution.

He further said: “Dr Zafrullah is a well-respected and wise man. But as people get older, they sometimes talk nonsensically. His remarks about Tarique Rahman are quite absurd.”

Tarique Rahman became acting chairman following the natural order as he had previously served as the joint secretary general and senior vice chairman of the party, said Fakhrul, a former state minister.

“There can be no question about the BNP’s leadership. The party is being led by Tarique Rahman and he is performing his duties with the utmost sincerity.

“Under his leadership, we are hopeful that the party will soon be organized and able to wage a movement to remove the dictatorial-fascist Awami government and establish a people's government,” he hoped.

On September 2, Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury asked the BNP leaders to take to the streets rather than holding press conferences.

He said: “Come back to the streets. We will be with you too. We also want to establish democracy in the country with you… but not the democracy of the Awami League.”

He also asked the BNP leaders to read the party constitution again since they were not following the ideology of the founder, Ziaur Rahman, anymore.
