BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is fabricating lies about former president Ziaur Rahman to shift the focus from the ongoing anti-government movement of his party.

He said: "The BNP standing committee thinks that the prime minister is presenting false information at the parliament to mislead people. She is conspiring to keep the people's democratic rights and the movement for restoration of democracy out of sight.”

He was speaking at a press conference in Dhaka on Sunday to highlight the decisions of their previous meeting.

Earlier in the day, the BNP leader appeared before a Dhaka court in a case filed against him and 50 others on charges of use of explosives during a demonstration six years ago. The court set November 21 for hearing in the case filed with Paltan police.

Mirza Fakhrul expressed deep concern over the publication of the draft of the proposed personal information protection law on the official government website.

Fakhrul said the draft was withdrawn from the government website on Saturday.

His party members think that such a law is another conspiracy to deprive the citizens of their right to free speech, which will become a major threat to democracy.

The BNP secretary general also condemned the attack on BNP leaders and activists in New York. "There have been attacks on peaceful meetings. We protest and condemn it."

On the release of BNP chief Khaleda Zia, Fakhrul said the government was afraid of her, which is why they were not allowing her to go abroad or release her.

Asked whether the BNP would start a movement to pressure the government, Mirza Fakhrul said: “It depends on the party’s decision.”

At the press conference, Fakhrul said the BNP has decided to hold meetings from September 21 to 23.

The party recently held a series of meetings with its policymakers and senior leaders to drum up support for an anti-government movement demanding an impartial Election Commission to oversee the next general elections slated for early 2023.
