He succeeds Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu who died of Covid-related complications
The Jatiya Party has appointed Mujibul Haque Chunnu as its secretary general after the death of Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu.
The appointment was made on Saturday by Chairman Golam Mohammed Qauder, the party said in a statement.
Bablu died a week ago from complications related to Covid-19 at the age of 66, prompting the Jatiya Party to announce three days of mourning.
In his initial reaction, Chunnu said he will work hard to strengthen the party.
“The party chairman has reposed trust in me. So, I’ll uphold his dignity through my work,” he told UNB.
Chunnu said he will focus on enhancing the party’s organizational strength to field Jatiya Party candidates in 300 seats and bring the party back to power.
An MP from Kishoreganj, Chunnu was the state minister for labour in the Sheikh Hasina-led cabinet during the 2014-2018 term. Prior to that he served as the state minister for youth and sports between November 2013 and January 2014 in the Awami League-led government.
He was elected a Jatiya Party lawmaker for the first time in 1986 during the regime of military dictator HM Ershad, who founded the party. Chunnu served as the deputy minister for land from 1987 to 1988 in the Ershad administration.
Chunnu found a seat in the parliament once again in the 2008 election. He was re-elected in the 2014 and 2018 national elections.
