Power and Energy Week begins on Wednesday
With the theme “Indomitable Bangladesh,” Power and Energy Week 2016 will begin in the country on Wednesday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the week at International Convention City Bashundhara in Dhaka, said State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference at Bidyut Bhaban in the city, the state minister said the week would be observed to celebrate the national production of 15,000MW of electricity. "This is a great occasion for us. Bangladesh has entered a modern and digital era," he added. He further said initiatives had been taken to bring modern power production facilities to Bangladesh. “We will soon see the benefit of it.” Replying to a question, Nasrul said the government planned to educate the nation about mega projects such as Rampal coal-fired power plant and Rooppur nuclear power plant during Power and Energy Week. "People have questions regarding these projects. There will be seminars of international standards on these issues, which will be streamed live on the website and the Facebook page of the Power Division,” he said. Asked about the expense of observing the occasion, Power Cell Director General Mohammad Hossain said around Tk10 crore had been alloted in this regard, half of which was contributed by the private sector and the rest by the government exchequer. Hossain said four international seminars would be conducted during the week: “The technologies of coal-based power plant,” “Smart grids: Digital Bangladesh and internet of things,” “Energy efficiency case studies” and “International best practices in power and energy sector: Lesson for South Asia and Bangladesh.” He further said a competition had been organised ahead of the occasion, where students from 50 universities participated with their innovative ideas and projects on energy-efficient and renewable energy projects. "Out of these, 10 best projects will be displayed in an exhibition during the week,” Hossain added. A total of 320 stalls from 125 government and private organisations will display their products during the week. The prime minister will also distribute 10 awards to organisations and individuals for making significant contribution to the country's power and energy sector. Nazimuddin Chowdhury, secretary of Energy and Mineral Resources Division, Monowar Islam, secretary of Power Division, and other power and energy officials attended the press conference as well, among others.
