Salman F Rahman: Solar energy will be the prime electricity source someday
Although renewable energy and related technologies are developing day by day, someday solar energy will become the prime source of electricity, says Private Sector Development Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Salman F Rahman. His remarks came on the last day of the 18th National Renewable Energy Conference and Green Expo 2018 on Thursday. The event was organized by the Institute of Energy of Dhaka University (DU) and Bangladesh Solar Energy Society (BSES). With the theme Sustainable Energy Management, the three-day-long conference had started on Tuesday at DU’s Sir Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building. The issues covered during the conference included power generation, distribution, utilization, industrial linkage, opportunities and challenges. Addressing the last day's opening session as the chief guest, Salman said: “We are self sufficient in food, developing our electricity sector and our population growth is also under control.” “Bangladesh has managed to lower the population growth rate compared to other countries of this subcontinent because of the higher literacy rate and the development in the private sector.” He said: “Foreign experts are earning $5 billion through their jobs in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi companies are hiring foreigners as there is a lack of skilled manpower. The country's manpower should be used in the country's workplaces. But for this we have to improve the skills of the young generation.” Later, addressing the closing ceremony in the afternoon, State minister for Power Nasrul Hamid said: “Renewable energy is an important sector for the future. The government will see to the development of this sector.” He also assured that the government would assist in building a laboratory for DU’s Institute of Energy. Earlier, the prime minister's Energy Adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury and Economic Adviser Mashiur Rahman were chief guests, respectively, on the first and second days of the conference. Art and debate competitions and Energy Olympiad were also held centring the conference and Green Expo.
