A Chittagong court has placed three temporary staff members  of the Election Commission (EC) on a two-day remand, in connection with their alleged involvement in helping Rohingyas obtain NIDs.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Salem Md Noman passed the order on Tuesday.

The accused are: Jahid, Shaheen and Pavel Barua. All of the three arrestees are data entry operators recruited by the EC as temporary staff.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP)Assistant Commissioner (prosecution) Kazi Shahabuddin, told Dhaka Tribune that the court granted two-day remand for each of the three EC staff members.

Previously on Sunday, CMP Counter-Terrorism Unit, the investigating agency of the case, detained four Election Commission staff members from the Chittagong District Election office.

Later, three of the four staff members were shown arrested on Sunday night. CMP released one of the staff members as they said that the particular staff member did not have any connection to the making of NIDs for Rohingyas.

Joynal Abedin, an office assistant at Double-Mooring Thana Election office, who was earlier arrested for helping Rohingyas get NIDs, named the trio in his confessional statement under Section 164, Counter Terrorism Unit Inspector Rajesh Barua told Dhaka Tribune.

Previously, the Election Commission temporarily suspended Joynal after he was accused in a case filed for helping Rohingyas obtain NIDs.
